Technical Abstract

The present invention relates to deblocking filtering, which may be advantageously applied for block-wise encoding and decoding of image or video signal. In particular, the present invention relates to performing an efficient and accurate decision on whether or not to apply deblocking filtering on an image block. The efficient and accurate decision is achieved by performing individual decisions on whether or not to apply deblocking filtering for segments of a boundary between adjacent image blocks, wherein the individual decision are based on pixels comprised in a subset of the pixel lines that the image blocks are composed of.

Claim 1

Original Legal Text

1. A method for processing an image to provide deblocking filtering, the image being divided into a plurality of blocks, each block including a plurality of pixel lines perpendicular to a boundary with an adjacent block, the method comprising: dividing one or more of the plurality of blocks into a plurality of portions fewer than the plurality of pixel lines, each of the plurality of portions consisting of one or more pixel lines; calculating a decision value for each of the plurality of portions of a block based on values of pixels in a subset of pixel lines of the block; and judging whether or not to apply a deblocking filter to each of the plurality of portions of the block based on the respective decision value calculated for the portion, wherein the judging whether or not to apply a deblocking filter to each portion includes comparing the respective decision value calculated for the portion with a threshold value.

Plain English Translation

An image processing method reduces blocking artifacts by selectively applying a deblocking filter. The image is divided into blocks, and each block has pixel lines perpendicular to its boundary with neighboring blocks. The method divides a block into smaller portions, each containing one or more pixel lines. For each portion, a "decision value" is calculated based on a subset of pixels within the block's pixel lines. This decision value is then compared to a threshold. If the decision value exceeds the threshold, the deblocking filter is applied to that specific portion of the block, smoothing the boundary and improving visual quality.
